About Us

The Maverick Youth Rugby Program was started in the Fall of 2007 with a core group of players from Bishop Dunne High School whose program was in existence for about 7 years before being terminated after the 2007 season. The youth program is supported by the Maverick RFC Men's side who have a been involved with High School Rugby in the past where they coached a team comprised of players from both Grand Prairie High Schools from 1998-2000 and a team in Cedar Hill in 2004.

The head coach of the High School side is Bill Moser who was the coach at Bishop Dunne and John Kurylas who is the President of the Men's side is helping with the admin portion of running a club as well as other members of the club helping with coaching and support. Both the Men and HS sides are practicing together twice a week which helps keep the cost down as there is no field rental charge.

The partnership between the Men's and HS sides has paid quick dividends as Bill's familiarity with many people in the Grand Prairie community has helped us get a new game field which we are very excited about. We have received support from Grand Prairie Parks and Rec and are planning to expand our program to include U12, U15 and U17 sides in the coming seasons.

With the many rugby programs there is a feeling out there from High School football coaches that we are trying to steal their players away which is far from the truth. Rugby at the Youth level is a considered a Spring (January to April) sport so there is no contention during the football season. Also given the rules regarding tackling and fitness required playing rugby will make you a better football player.

Rugby is the most popular contact sport in the world and is being played by tens of thousands across America from youth to high school to college to Men's and even Old Boys.

You may ask why are we doing this. Well the answer is simple. It's because we love the game and want nothing more than to see it grow. Some of us are in our 40's and 50's and still playing while some have hung up their boots to be a referee or supporter on the sideline. Regardless we are one big happy rugby family.

We are looking for players from anywhere in the DFW area for the upcoming 2008 season. No experience is necessary, we will teach you the game.
