The Maverick Youth Rugby Program was started in the Fall of 2007 with a core group of players and coach, Bill Moser, from Bishop Dunne High School. Their program was in existence for about 7 years before being terminated after the 2007 season. Our youth program is supported by the Maverick RFC Men's side who have a been involved with High School Rugby in the past, having coached a team comprised of players from both Grand Prairie High Schools from 1998-2000 as well as a team in Cedar Hill in 2004.
After a couple years hiatus, we are bring the club back together starting this fall of 2016 with introductory clinics starting in October with looking to start competitive play in the spring. We have partnered with the Grand Prairie Mavericks Men's side to put on these clinics to introduce the greater community of Grand Prairie to this sport that we love so much!
Why would we support a youth rugby program? Well, the answer is simple. It's because we love the game and want nothing more than to see it grow. We vary from our mid 20s, still playing in our prime, to 50s and 60s, looking to give back to a game that has given us so many friends and memories. Regardless, we are one big happy rugby family!
With many rugby programs in the US and particularly Texas, there appears to be a general opinion from High School football coaches that we are trying to steal their players away from football. This is far from the truth. Rugby at the Youth and High School level is a considered a Spring (January to April) sport so there is no contention during the football season. Also given the rules regarding tackling (i.e. requiring wrapping up and no hits above the collar bone) and fitness required playing rugby will make one a better football player.
Rugby is the most popular contact sport in the world and is being played by tens of thousands across America from youth to high school to college to Men's & Women's senior sides, even Old Boys. It was also a resounding success at the 2016 Rio Olympics with Fiji taking home the gold.
We are looking for players from anywhere in the DFW area for the Spring and Summer seasons. No experience is necessary, we will teach you the game.
