Playing 7s this Fall?

TYRA, the Texas Youth Rugby Association is putting together a Fall 7s series. This will be similar to the summer series in which we did so well. The Grand Prairie Mavericks are gauging interest and we want your opinion. If you are interested and want to play 7s this fall please fill out the poll on the right hand side of the web site. You may leave comments on this posting as well.

Mr. Twaddell took some great pictures of both the men and high school players at the Mudfish Tournament. See yourself in action!

Mavericks Beat the Heat at Mudfish

Four of the Maverick Youth Ruggers assisted the men's team in the absolutely hottest tournament of the year. James Kelly, Chris Kelly, Mike "Ginger" Hanawacker and Lorenzo Marconi stepped up in 103 degree oppressively humid weather and played against mens' teams. Ginger scored in our only victory over DARC. We lost a close one to MSU and then, after a hard fought battle, to the Reds. Everyone played well in the blazing sun but could tell that fitness had fallen after a month's break.

The Reds went on to play the Tongan Nation, a.k.a. the Euless Islanders, in the final. Euless went on to win both the Mudfish and Minnow division. They had at least 60 players suited up and looked very impressive, especially with some of our former Mavericks leading the team.

Next on the agenda is the AirHogs baseball pool party 8/28. Check the web site for details. This party is open to the our Allen teammates as well as any friends from other teams you wish to invite (and have $25).

Youth Join Men's Team for MudFish 8/7

The Mavericks will join the men's team for entry into the minnows division of the MudFish tournament this weekend, Saturday 8/7. The weight limit is under 220 lbs or something like that. The majority of the Maverick Youth team weighs more than most of the Maverick men that are participating in the minnow division.

The Super MudFish games kicks off at 9:00 AM. Come watch the likes or Mr. Kurylas, Shay, Nate, Jo Jo and other heavy weights compete in the "biggest game" of the year. Minimum weight for this game is a whopping 250 lbs.

Show up at 9:00 AM at the Las Colinas Polo Grounds and so that you may be added to the roster. Showing up late provides a good view from the sidelines. This tournament could cost as much as $20 a head to play. Be prepared. Bring $$.

Plano 7s Shedule

As you can see below our first game is at 8:50. Show up the field at 8:00AM. Our next games are at 10 and 11:30. The play offs start at 2:00PM and the final is scheduled for 3:45PM.

We will need everybody available to come. You can play as much as you want and there will be an hour rest between games.

Remember to bring $5.00 for the tournament entry fee.

NTX 7s at Las Colinas July 24

Plano Rugby is hosting the next tournament in the North Texas 7s Rugby Series. It will be held at Plano's new home pitch, the Las Colinas Polo Club at 600 E. Royal Lane, Irving TX. If coming from Luna Rd, you'll have to make a U-turn just over the bridge and come back, then turn right into the center.

Show up to practice this week so that we can get a head count. Those with better attendance get premium game time. Canterbury and guys who have been running with us from other schools are included and welcome, please show up.

The games are scheduled to start at 8:00AM, so be there dressed and ready to roll at 7:30AM. This is a bigger tournament with more youth divisions - U11, U13, U15 with girls divisions along with our U17/19. The tournament will be run in a more regimented and orderly fashion, so timeliness is required. Be there on time!

Also, there is an actual entry fee that we will be required to pay. Each player will have to bring $5 U.S Currency to play. Cheap!

Here's the tournament flier with the wrong date - it's really July 24!

Mavs Plan for Plano Tourney 7/24

The Mavericks are skipping the Houston Woodlands Tournament this weekend and gearing up for the rescheduled NTX 7s Plano Tournament on July 24. This will be held at the Las Colinas Polo Club.

If you are interested in going to the Woodlands and picking up with another team for the day, contact Coach Kelly.

The last 7s Tournament of the summer will be the Dallas Mudfish 7s held in late August. This is not part of the NTX 7s Series, but has been a very competitive and fun tournament in the past.

July 10 Tournament Postponed to July 24

There will be no NTX 7s Tournament this weekend, Saturday July 10. Plano has postponed the tournament at the polo grounds until July 24. No reasons were given, but I'm sure they were good. All the details will remain the same, except for the date.

Grand Prairie is scheduled to host the next tournament on Saturday July 17 at our home pitch, Prairie Park in Grand Prairie. More details will come later.
