The fields are field 4 and 3, which are the two fields closest to Legendary Drive and the east parking lot in front of the church. Please note that areas of the parking lot may be cordoned off by cones. Please do not remove cones and do not park in cordoned off areas if any. Please also only park on pavement, not on grass. Field 4 will be regulation size with goal posts and lined for rugby. All matches will take place on Field 4. Field 3 will be used for warm ups and any clinics, and while it has goal posts, will not be lined. Alex McCullough of Panthers will conduct a beginners clinic and is bringing girls over from Fort Worth so all clubs are encouraged to bring out any girls interested in learning about rugby. Facilities:
There are no toilet facilities or water supply at the fields. Do NOT go into the church for this. There are service stations nearby which can be used. There will be a container of Gatorade at the field. There are a couple of small bleachers but teams are recommended to bring tents and chairs. These facilities are being made available to us for free. There was quite a bit of garbage lying around in the area between the parking lot and the fields last week. If this has not been cleared up by Saturday, we will undertake to clear it up on behalf of the church and provide each team a garbage bag and ask you to fill it between matches. Teams:
Based on commitments that have been made, there will be two pools of three teams per pool.

Pool 1Pool 2
Plano APlano B/Barbarians
Match Schedule:
Each team will play three matches altogether. Two matches are played against each other team in their respective pool as per the below match schedule. After the pool matches and based on win/loss, head to head and/or overall aggregate points, there will be playoffs for 1st, 3rd and 5th. The sequence of these playoff matches may change based on which pool matches were last played, so no team has to play back to back matches. We have allowed 1/2 hour per match so should be able to stay or get ahead of schedule. Please have your teams warmed up ready to play 10 minutes before the scheduled kick off. If coaches agree, halves can be longer than 7 1/2 minutes. Each team must provide one touch judge per their match.

Mavericks Win Allen/Frisco Tournament Division 2

The Maverick Youth came away from Frisco champions of the 2nd Division. A great tournament hosted by Allen and the Frisco Griffins was played out in what was the windiest and coldest rugby day, and night, of the year. The finals were held just before the Frisco Griffins were to play the feared Texas Islanders. Results were announced over the loud stadium speakers. Many thanks go to John Shafto of Allen for organizing, all the coaches and players, the Frisco Griffins for inviting us to "Rugby TX Night", providing the spectacular venue for the finals and especially the Allen moms and dads who provided the tail gate in very cold conditions, who also ordered and picked up the trophies and set up the Allen field.

The Mavericks, with only 9 players, started out the day finding that our first game was hours away. This allowed us to have a intense and focused skills practice, fine tuning what was needed to accomplish our game plan. Our hands and passes were in top order and ready to lead us on to victory. Even our lineouts looked to be unbeatable.

Our first game was against Alliance 2 and though they had some size we made effective tackles, for the most part and won plenty of ball at the breakdowns. Alliance just couldn't keep up with our pace and ball movement. We finished that game without being scored upon. We didn't stick to the game plan as our backs kept the ball instead of passing, speedy winger Chris Merimon did not receive a single pass at wing. But, our athleticism won out with strong breaks on the inside, by Chris Kelly and Chris Schultz.

The 2nd game was against Plano 2. These guys were bigger and faster and did score on us but, they too, couldn't keep up with our speed and continuous breaks for the long haul. Again, ball hogging on the inside forced us to play some frantic rugby, and again, our natural abilities, experience and aggressiveness won it for us.

Having won both our round robin matches put us in the finals to be held at the Dr. Pink stadium in Frisco. After the sun dropped the North wind raged in dropping the temperature to near Arctic levels. Most of us were under dressed and shivering. After an understandably lack luster warm up, we took the field against Allen 2. This looked to be a big match against the toughest team in the other bracket on the widest, windiest field yet. We won the toss and elected to kick off with the wind for the first half. Promise Jackson scored on the opening kick off and we never looked back. (Hint: never let the ball touch the ground on any kick!) Unfortunately, high tackles by multiple Mavericks forced the ref to understandably dole out a yellow card, making us play a man down. After a big first half, Allen came out with their heads down and never got close to being in the game, even with us being down a man at the start. Allen played hard, with heart and never gave up but it was just too much to overcome.

The post tournament celebration was something to be remembered. For our D2 victory, we received the largest trophy yet to be handed out at a youth 7s tournament. Captain, Chris Kelly was recognized as D2 Tournament MVP and awarded a large trophy as well.

A great day by our fine Mavericks: Captain - Chris Kelly, Promise Jackson, Chris Schultz, Chris Merimon, Richard Gonzalez, Dillon King, Ginger Hanawacker, Lorenzo Marconi, Kasy Chapa.

If you have photos of this great event, please contact Mr. Kelly so that we may post them on the site.

Mavs Win All Games at Gateway

The Mavericks won every game in at the Gateway Tournament on 11/20. We played Jesuit 2, Allen 2 and Panther City. The "3 Chris's" led the score board with numbers as Chris Kelly, Chris Schultz and Chris Merimon sliced through, over and under the defense for points. Lorenzo Marconi scored and played great defense. Dillon King played his first game and got his first try. The team played extremely well and passed much better than their mentors, the Men's Maverick backline. Move over old men, you've got some competition!

Jesuit 1 won the tournament. Though we won out, we were in the 2nd division and our finals match opponent bowed out due to injury and exhaustion. We could make a case for saying we came in 3rd overall.

Sat 11/20 Full 7s Tournament at Gateway Park

UPDATED UPDATE!!: Tournament start moved to 8:20AM. Mavs first game at 9AM. Be there at 8AM for captains meeting!

Saturday November 20, Alex McCulloch and Panther City Rugby are hosting the final Tournament of the Fall 7-a-Side Rugby series. Teams from Allen, Plano, Alliance and Jesuit, as well as a girls division will be participating.

The tournament will run from 8:20AM to 1:00PM with a cookout afterward. Be there at 8:00AM dressed and ready to warm up. Don't forget your mouthpiece!

The tournament is free and you will not need to be CIPP'ed, but they are asking for $3 donation for all those hamburgers, dogs and snacks you guys eat after these Gateway functions. Bring your own water. The park will not allow Gatorade or colored drinks into the field area.

UPDATED!! Tournament Schedule

From Coach McCulloch:
There is no entry fee, but we do ask for a $3.00 donation to assist with food costs: break – juice & fruit; lunch – hamburger/hotdog, chips, drink, dessert

There will also be an athletic trainer onsite to attend to injuries. If players want to get taped they need to bring enough tape, or be prepared to pay nominal fee of $2.00 to $5.00 per area.

Panther City Rugby holds a GL insurance policy independent from USA Rugby. This event will be covered under the Club's policy, which covers all coaches and referees involved, so that new players that are not CIPP'd in time can participate.

10/30 Tournament Moved to Ft. Worth

Saturday 10/30 8:00AM. This weekend's activities have been moved to Fort Worth's Gateway Park. This is due to not having enough players pay their CIPP dues.

Instead of going to Frisco to participate in a round robin tournament, we will work in with Ft. Worth's youth rugby program.

Show up at 8:00AM, we'll run skills drills, have a scrimmage and then a cookout at 12:30. Mr. Alex McCulloch of Ft. Worth runs a good event and it should be a lot of fun. It will be good learning experience for new players and a great warm up for those guys that haven't been out for a while.

See you there!

Games Start at 9AM 10/30 in Frisco

The 7s will start right after the captains meeting at 9:00AM Saturday morning, October 30. Please be there at 8:30AM dressed and ready to play so we can run over some basic tactics, rules and safety. We will provide the jerseys, you will need to bring your own mouthguard, shorts with a tie string as people will tackle you by your shorts (no bare asses, please), and soccer style cleats with no toe cleat.

The field is not far off of the Dallas North tollway at the Frisco Griffins practice field. Here's the map: You will have to take toll roads to get there. If you do not have a toll tag, they will send you a bill in the mail. Pay it. Otherwise they tack on outrageous late fees.

We are scheduled to play 3 games of 14 minute 7 a side rugby.

The tournament administrators have stated that all players must be CIPPed to participate. Please see the information on the Registration/Dues section of our web site. This must be done by Friday evening. If you wish Mr. Kelly to register you, bring $55 to practice on Thursday. He will need your full name, address, birthday, phone numbers and email address, already written on a separate piece of paper, plus the $55 cash or check.

Post any questions on the web site as a comment.
