Exhibition Game Sunday June 27 - Las Colinas Polo Grounds

They have requested a Barbarian style (mixed players from other teams) exhibition match for their new sponsor and pitch starting at 5:30, Sunday June 27. The Mavericks, being fine gentlemen and supporters of rugby, have graciously offered players for this event. It is strictly voluntary and should be lots of fun. We already have several committed and are looking for more. All are welcome, just communicate your intentions to Mr. Kelly and show up at 4:30 to the polo grounds.

Final Game of Season in Plano at Noon

The final game of the Maverick HS Rugby season will be held at noon at High Point Park in Plano. The map is on the schedule page. Be there dressed and ready by 11:00AM.

The 15s season may be drawing to a close but Summer 7s is about to start. Coaches and teams are already coordinating tournaments and 7s camps throughout the Metroplex. More details on this to follow. We will be working on our 7s skills Tuesday and Thursday nights at Prairie Park 6:30PM for the remainder of the summer. Look forward to the Grand Prairie Mavericks hosting several 7s camps during these practices.

Fantastic Performance at Texas A&M

The Mavericks combined with Allen played their best rugby of the season at the Gareth Jones High School Rugby Tournament in College Station (4/10/2010). They also played the most rugby of the year, with club playing 3 games and the North Texas Rattlers playing 2 and 3 more. Every single Maverick attending the tournament played on the North Texas All-Star team.

The first game of the day was against the perpetually strong St. Thomas of Houston. We lost that one 17-10 on a couple of missed tackles but our strong pack dominated all forward play.

Next was Ray's alma mater, Katy. Defense was superb, pack play remained dominant, and the backs were able to make some long runs after superb mauling and rucking. We still managed to lose that one, but only by 3 points, 7-0.

We finished with a victory over Alamo Heights, an extremely strong team that beat St. Thomas 13-10. We managed victory in the last minute on a sneaky penalty play by Chris Kelly to win 10-5.

Players were selected from the tournament to attend Sunday's Texas High Performance Camp for a shot at the Texas All-Star Team. Given the honor to attend the U17 camp, were Jacob Burke, Chris Kelly, and Mike Hanawacker. James Kelly made it to the U19 camp. After 3 hours of hard running and drills, the selector put in their tallies. Chris and Mike got invited to the next camp at Sam Houston State University in June. Now word on the U19 yet.

Make sure you congratulate these tough durable ruggers for their superb performance and enduring stamina. All parents and coaches were overwhelmingly impressed and extremely proud. The young men had a great time which you will see in their faces when you ask.

Mavericks Win 34-3

The Mavericks combined with Allen beat Canterbury Wednesday evening with a score of 34 to 3. Everyone played excellently!

Due to Easter and the fact that we we have Canterbury scheduled 3 times in 2 weeks, the Saturday 4/3 game has been canceled.

Start gathering your money for the Texas A&M tournament. You will need $$ for food and rooms. We are planning to go down Friday night and return Sunday.

Canterbury Wednesday 6:00 PM at Glencoe Park

The Mavericks are slated to take on Canterbury at Glencoe Park in Dallas at Wednesday 3/31 at 6:00 PM.

Be at the Glencoe Park by 4:30. Why? Because the traffic is horrible after that! We will work together with Allen and run through some plays. The time working together will definitely improve our skills and teamwork.

We are using these next few games to gear up for the big high school tournament at Texas A & M on April 10. The next 3 weeks are going to be consumed with Rugby and be the most important of the year.

The Gareth Jones Youth Tournament at Texas A&M April 10 is going to be a full weekend. We will be leaving Friday and coming back Sunday evening. The coaches and parents will be making the hotel arrangement. Details will be forthcoming and parents are welcome. Arrange your schedule and start saving money for this huge event.

Game Moved to Lake Highlands 11:00 AM

Our match against Plano has been moved to Lake Highlands at 11:00AM. This is good news. Be there dressed and ready to play at 10:00. Directions on the Schedule page.

The location change is good news. This means all our players and coaches will be together. Our players trying out for the North Texas Rattlers, will be at the same field and can join us for the game.

Rattlers still need to be at the field at 8:30 AM.

For the match against Plano, some positions are set already. It looks like Tony will be starting scrum half and Jacob at fly half.

See you at practice tonight - remember it's at the game field at 6:30 and NOT under the lights.

This Saturday March 27....

Conflicting schedules with Allen and the North Texas Rattlers has forced us to cancel our game against Alliance at Lake Highlands. Allen has a game scheduled against Plano in Allen at 11:30. Be there at 10:30. Specific directions will be on the schedule soon. Allen is pretty far away so leave early to get your place on the squad. Last time, the late comers had to wait and did not get as much game time. Mr. Kelly will not be there, so you will have to let Coach Munstedt know that you are there, what position you want to play, and that you are ready to go.

If you are trying out for the North Texas Rattlers (All Stars) at Lake Highlands, then the schedule is below. The U17 schedule conflicts with the Allen game. If you are U19 then you can play in Allen and come down to Lake Highlands for an easy work out and ensure your place on the squad.

Rattlers U17

8:45 – dressed and ready

9am – 10:30ish Light training

12:30 Match – Rattlers U17 vs. AAHS ( 3 X 20 minute periods )

Rattlers U19

1:45 – dressed and ready ( tennis shoes )

1:50 – 2:50 light training

Practice Canceled Again - March 11

Unfortunately, the rain has forced the closure of all the Grand Prairie Parks again. Practice has been canceled for Thursday, 3/11/2010. We have no game this weekend.

Our next scheduled game is Saturday, March 27 in Dallas at Lake Highlands Park against Alliance. There will be a High School All-Star game too. Some of us will be in that one. More details on the schedule will be forthcoming.

Don't forget to set your clocks forward this weekend!

Schedule Changes

There are a few important schedule changes!!

The game this Saturday 3/6 against Plano has been switched to play Jesuit at 9:30 AM at Glencoe Park in Dallas . That's right! A morning game! Be at the field at 8:15 AM. You'll have the rest of the day to do the chores your Mom has for you.

Our Alliance game on 3/27 has been moved to Lake Highlands Park, Dallas with a time yet to be set. It will be a tournament style format where we play teams from the Austin area too.

See you at practice Thursday and then bright and early Saturday morning.
